Our Best Teaching Practices

Student tracking is one of our most successful best practices. Through the use of our progress grid and by consistent input from teachers, we identify students early in the program who need additional support and work hard to give them the help that they need. We also use the grid to make graduate projections several months in advance and send these students letters of congratulations advising them that they have been projected to be in the next graduation. These students' names are listed on bulletin boards all over center and that really helps to keep them motivated toward reaching their goals.

~ Principal, Inland Empire Job Corps, San Bernardino, CA

I attribute our student success to:

o Integrating social services and academic education

o Developing an individual learning plan for each student

o Student focused instruction

o Mainstreamed ESL and Special Ed Instruction

o Skills mastery for placement and progression

~ Dave Gerber, Principal, Fred G. Acosta Job Corps Site, Tucson, AZ

My staff and I always try to greet students as they enter our building and classrooms. This sets the tone for the day and we can also see if a student is not at his/her best and may need some extra attention. About a month before graduation, I play the Pomp and Circumstance tape each day as students enter while reminding them of their goals.

~ Tina Bullock, Principal, Gainesville, FL

We have a unique situation here that allows students to learn a trade at Job Corps while completing their education through SIATech. Students do well in SIATech classrooms and leave with employable skills based on the technology-infused curriculum which also helps them in their academic classes.

~ Principal, Sacramento Job Corps, Sacramento, CA

Albuquerque's "Best Practice" is to utilize student work/input whenever possible. (eg. graduation announcements, invitations, holiday cards...etc.) It brings in great "buy in" and "ownership" from both the students and staff.

~ Kelly Callahan, Principal, Albuquerque Job Corps, New Mexico
