SIATech Jacksonville Student Stories and Gallup Student Poll Results
by Kathryn Cooley
SIATech Jacksonville is very proud to feature three students who will graduate very soon.
Before hearing about Job Corps through a friend, Thomas Humes was living in Ft. Myers, Florida, working part-time as an auto mechanic. He had dropped out of high school and was seeking a way to continue his education. When he entered SIATech, Thomas says that he was very pleased to discover that he could work at his own pace. He has progressed through his classes very quickly and has earned the highest ACT scores ever earned at SIATech Jacksonville. He earned a 28 in Reading, a 24 Math, and a 21 in English. Upon graduation, Thomas plans to either attend college or enter the Navy.
Shanae Reid received an unaccredited diploma and attended a technical school for almost two years in Miami, Florida, prior to entering Job Corps. She had a strong desire to earn an accredited high school diploma, so she enrolled in SIATech. Shanae says that SIATech helped her to realize that she could strengthen her writing skills. Her success with her writing assignments gave her the confidence to write poetry. She was then inspired to share her work with others. As a result, she has gained confidence to pursue more opportunities for self-expression. She says that she has realized that people will listen to her. When she graduates, Shanae will attend college and pursue a major that includes writing, such as Journalism, English, or Film.
Carlos Ortiz was living in Orlando, Florida, and riding a bike to his part-time dish-washing job. He heard about Job Corps through friends and television. He decided to enroll in SIATech because he wanted to earn a standard high school diploma. He was concerned because he had always struggled in school, but says that the SIATech staff gave him all the support he needed. Carlos says that he thought getting a diploma was impossible for him, so his self-confidence has been greatly boosted. After he graduates, Carlos plans on getting a job in HVAC, becoming a journeyman, and eventually starting his own company. He also plans on attending college.
The Gallup Student Poll at SIATech Jacksonville
SIATech Jacksonville made significant improvements in their student participation in the Fall 2010 Gallup Student Poll. Jacksonville was able to poll 85% of students on the eligible list.
The poll questioned students about their feelings in three areas: hope, well-being, and engagement. In the area of hope, 61% of Jacksonville students responded that they were hopeful in regard to their future. This represents a 20% increase since the previous Gallup poll of Spring 2010. On the poll, students ranked statements such as: “I know I will graduate from high school,” and “There is an adult in my life who cares about my future,” on a 5 point scale. According to Gallup, hope drives attendance, credits earned, and high school GPA. Hope is a predictor of college GPA and retention. Hope scores are better predictors of college success than high school GPA, SAT, and ACT scores.
In the area of engagement, which reflects the involvement and enthusiasm for school, 54% of Jacksonville students indicated that they were engaged. Examples of statements in this area are as follows: “I have a best friend at school,” and “At this school, I have the opportunity to do what I do best everyday.” According to Gallup, engagement scores separate high-performing from low-performing schools.
In the area of well-being, which is how we think about and experience our lives, 61% of Jacksonville students indicated that they were "thriving." This represents an increase of 7% since spring 2010. Gallup describes well-being as an indicator of how students are currently doing. Well-being also predicts future success. Thriving students earn more credits and higher GPAs than students you are struggling or suffering. In this area, students ranked statements such as: "Were you treated with respect all day yesterday?" and "Did you learn or do something interesting yesterday?"
Overall, results of the Gallup poll show that SIATech Jacksonville is having a positive impact on students’ lives. Faculty and staff attribute the encouraging results of the survey to the relationships that they form with students. Teachers make great efforts to get to know each student and to differentiate instruction according to each one’s needs. Staff and faculty of Jacksonville SIATech are strongly committed to being accessible to students. Certainly, this approach helps build student hope, well-being, and engagement.

Building Staff Unity in Jacksonville
Instructors share best practices and work together to keep students on the path to graduation
by Marjorie Lopez
While SIATech may be known as a dropout recovery high school, once students enroll in SIATech, all attention turns to dropout prevention. There is constant relationship-building, tracking of progress, and necessary interventions to ensure students stay on the path to graduation and attainment of their individual goals.
One way that staff members work to support each student with reaching his or her maximum potential, instructors in Jacksonville have employed the use of Professional Learning Community (PLC) meetings. During these professional development sessions, staff members share best practices for helping students move through the curriculum in a timely manner, share information about new projects, and discuss scheduling and ITA rotation schedules. SIATech Jacksonville instructors lead the process. The teachers facilitate the meetings and set the agenda to address instructional items that are highly relevant to the staff and their students' needs.
