Overview

SIATech at the Long Beach Job Corps Center is located six miles from downtown Long Beach. The city of Long Beach has been described as the “most diverse city” in the nation by USA Today, and that diversity is reflected in the richly integrated population on the Long Beach Job Corps campus.

The center capacity is 300 students, approximately 260 live on center and 40 commute. In addition to residence halls, the campus has fully equipped classrooms, workshops, a recreation area, cafeteria and a gym. The center is a community with adults from not only Long Beach but also those of many nearby communities. SIATech classrooms are located in the Academic wing of the Education and Training Building of Job Corps.

Some unique site characteristics include the collaboration of SIATech staff with Long Beach Job Corps staff to create a semi-annual yearbook that is presented to graduating seniors at the SIATech graduation. Also, SIATech at Long Beach is connected with the larger community through the Long Beach Job Corps Center. Some past collaborative activities include local park clean-ups within the city of Long Beach, building lifeguard towers for the Los Angeles County Beaches and participating with Habitat for Humanity in building homes for the disadvantaged.

Students at Graduation

California State Senator Lowenthal with interns from SIATech Long BeachSIATech Long Beach congratulated its class of graduates on July 30. California State Senator Lowenthal with interns from SIATech Long BeachThe graduation featured two graduates who served as legislative interns to Senator Lowenthal. Esteban de la Pena and Lundin Clark (pictured above) were chosen to work with Senator Lowenthal due to their dedication, professionalism, and communication skills. According to the Long Beach Principal Ron Stagg, "Esteban has gone through many struggles and has many stories to tell, but his relentless attitude has led him to success."

Lundin Clark has high intrinsic motivation and was very involved on the SIATech campus. Principal Stagg commented, "She impressed Senator Lowenthal’s staff with her professionalism, her talent, and her gift of being able to communicate and connect to people." Both students earned a business technology trade completion and a high school diploma.

SIATech graduations are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the success of the individual SIATech student as well as the positive impact a graduating class will have in their respective communities. The senator's compliments of the students' ability to overcome obstacles and provide leadership to others in their community were an appropriate focus of this important event. Congratulations to the graduates and the Long Beach community!
